Leica IIIa

The Leica IIIa was produced beginning in 1935 and was the most common of the pre-War Leica rangefinders, with production ending in 1938. It is similar to the earlier Leica III  but with the addition of a top shutter speed of 1/1000th. All Leica IIIa cameras were finished in silver chrome, though it was possible to have an earlier model black camera updated at the factory to IIIa spec. Leica designated the camera the Autofocal Camera Model G -- rangefinder focusing was considered "automatic" at the time!

As with other Leica rangefinder cameras of this generation the IIIa uses the M39 screw-mount lenses. It has separate rangefinder and viewfinder windows, and film is loaded in through the base of the camera.
