Harman Red - 120

HARMAN RED 125 is an ISO 125 redscale film based on the Harman Phoenix emulsion.  Harman introduced this film on Valentine's Day of 2025 as a fun alternative to their Phoenix 200 color negative film. In true redscale fashion, Harman Red is essentially Phoenix 200 flipped over so that the base side is facing out and toward the camera lens, causing exposures to go through the red layers of the emulsion first. ‘Redscale’ describes the effect you get when shooting through the back of a color film. By doing this you are exposing your image through the film’s base and the red sensitive layer first while also significantly reducing the impact of the blue sensitive layer. When accurately exposed, this typically removes the blue from the image whilst creating almost monochromatic results primarily consisting of reds, oranges and yellows.

Harman Red differs from other current redscale films in a couple subtle ways.  Since it uses the same almost-clear, slightly purple base as Phoenix instead of the typical deep orange base of other color negative films, Harman Red scans differently and with a lot more yellow tones overall. In fact, when looking at Harman Red negatives it is immediately apparent how monochromatically blue each frame is and since this blue inverts during printing or scanning, Harman Red images tend to have more yellow in them than other redscale methods, which look a deeper red unless heavily overexposed.

Despite the natural slowing of film when redscales (usually you need to compensate by a stop or more from the original film's native speed) Harman Red only drops to ISO 125 from the ISO 200 of Phoenix.  This is likely aided by the aforementioned clear base which cuts much less light as exposures pass through it. It would also appear that since this film is manufactured specifically for redscale shooting that it lacks a heavy anti-halation layer that both causes a nice glow in images while also keeping the film from slowing down even further.

Harman Red has pretty good latitude and decently fine grain.  Between its high contrast and crazy red and orange saturation it is a fun film for changing up your style!
