We see a lot of beautiful large format field cameras in our line of work and the Chamonix 45N-1 is no exception. ⠀
Chamonix is a Chinese company founded in 2005 by a Chinese mountaineer and photographer who wanted a lighter weight field camera for his mountain treks. So he started his own company to build them. ⠀ ⠀
The cameras are gorgeous, mechanically simply, really light and ultra versatile. The company produces cameras for a vast range of formats from 4x5 up to 20x24. In between, there are all the usual suspects like 5x7 and 8x10, as well as some unusual ones such as a 5x8 and a 14x17. And yes, Chamonix makes film holders for all of these formats as well.
The 45N-1 combines wood, anodized aluminum and carbon fiber to make a sturdy and light little field camera. It has full front movements (center axis tilt and a ton of rise) along with rear tilt and swing (sorry no rear rise or shift).
One of the features we like the best is the focusing - a screw-driven mechanism located at the rear center of the camera bed, right under the focusing screen, which we find more convenient than the knobs-on-the-standards configuration found on most cameras.⠀
So, if you are in the market for a 4x5 camera that can easily go everywhere with you, give this one some consideration.
