While the standard Voigtlander Bessa III 667 (aka the Fuji GF670) has enjoyed a growing cult popularity among medium format enthusiasts over the past decade or so, even fewer are aware of or have ever worked with its wide angle sibling. The Voigtlander Bessa III 667W traded the normal Bessa III's 80mm lens for a fixed 55mm f4.5 (the equivalent of a 28mm on full frame 35mm). The other big change is that the 667W is not a folder. But other than these differences, this is as amazing as the original Bessa III 667 in all the same ways. The camera is designed to be fast, simple and intuitive to use. Check, check and check. The electronic leaf shutter is so quiet sometimes you cannot hear it fire even with your eye pressed to the viewfinder! The camera can switch between the 6x6 and 6x7 formats. And there is the viewfinder. Talk to a Bessa III 667 user and they will tell you that the viewfinder on these cameras is one of their big draws. It is bright, it is crisp, it adjusts frame lines to match your format and it corrects for parallax as you focus. We have heard some claim it to be the best viewfinder one can find on a medium format camera... or maybe any camera.
The fact that the Bessa III 667W is a non-folding, fixed lens camera leaves it more compact than a folded-out Bessa III but slightly larger than the folded-up Bessa III. But get one of these cameras in hand and you likely won't give a second thought to its size as you will be too enraptured by the crisp viewfinder and enjoying that wide angle 55mm lens so much.
Originally marketed under the Voigtlander name as the Voigtlander Bessa III 667W, it is possible to find these cameras every once in a while as the Fuji GF670W.
Voigtlander Bessa III 667W
The Voigtlander Bessa III 667W replaces the folding bellows assembly of its more common sibling with a traditional lens helical. While this makes the 667W slightly less compact than the standard Bessa III, it also makes it a simpler and more durable camera. The 667W's 55mm f4.5 Color Skopar lens offers the same excellent imaging characteristics as the 80mm f3.5 found in the Bessa III, but with a much wider angle of view more suited to street and architectural photography.
