Ricoh XR7

Released in 1982, the Ricoh XR7 is a manual focus, 35mm SLR camera that stands up pretty well with its contemporary brethren.  The camera is made all the better due to it use of the Pentax K-mount system for its lenses.

The XR7 has all the features you would want in an SLR.  It is capable of both manual and aperture priority exposure, with accompanying AE lock and exposure compensation.  It has an electronic self-timer.  It's shutter speed range, in manual mode, runs from 1/1,000 at the top end all the way down to 16 seconds, plus a Bulb mode.  It has a depth of field preview lever.  It even has an easy-to-use multiple exposure function - we wish more cameras included this feature.  Because Ricoh doesn't have the brand recognition of Nikon or Canon, Minolta, Pentax or Olympus, and because the camera is composed mostly of plastic, the XR7 tends to be found for bargain prices.  Need a cheap but fully functional student camera?  Track down an XR7.
