Nikon Action Touch

The Nikon Action Touch, aka the L35AWAF, is an often overlooked and under-sung camera.

Yes, we know there are some out there that will be annoyed at us for shining a spotlight on this camera and, potentially, raising its profile.  But you know what?  All those Action Touch lovers themselves were once completely ignorant of this camera's existence.  They too had to have that first introduction and epiphany as to how good a camera the Action Touch is.  It is that experience we want to share.
The Action Touch was introduced by Nikon in the mid 1980s.  It was billed as an "all weather" camera, but can be taken underwater to a depth of about 10 feet (at least is could be taken to that depth in the 1980s, when the seals in the camera were fresh).  The camera features a fixed 35mm f/2.8 lens, auto exposure, auto focus, auto wind, and built in flash.  It doesn't have a whole lot in terms of features but, rather than impress with its array of capabilities, the Action Touch instead impresses by how splendidly it does what it does.  It is built well, the lens is great, and the camera is easy to use.  What's not to like about that?  One feature we think is pretty cool about the Action Touch is its ability to also manually focus.  This was primarily meant for underwater use, where auto focus would fail, but also works well in low light, shooting through windows, or any other situation where that 1980s AF technology doesn't quite perform up to standards.
If you are lucky you can still find these cameras on eBay for as low as $40-$50, but their prices have begun climbing.  It isn't uncommon to see them easily break $100.  Even at $100 or $150, we'd still argue it is well worth it.  Be careful though, as these cameras show their age, their motors are failing and their water seals are leaky.  Still, if you get one in good working order, you are quickly going to become a champion of this camera.
