Have you ever wondered how simple a "simple" camera can get? It's just a light-tight box with a hole at one side and a piece of film on the other, right? Well, if simple is your goal, the the Halina 35X is the ultimate 35mm camera for you.
One of a series of viewfinder cameras made by the China-based W. Haking Company, the Halina 35X debuted in 1959 and featured, well, very few features. With only a viewfinder, there is no focus assist, so zone focus is achieved by using the focus scale on the lens barrel.
Selecting the shutter speed on the Halina 35X is a quick matter as the choices are limited to four options plus a bulb setting. With the 45mm f/3.5 lens the options are indeed endless as there are no detentes between f/3.5 and f/16 noted on the lens barrel. In reality, the aperture stops down a little more than advertised, so getting an exposure correct with different films should be possible.
Given the ultimate simplicity of this camera, it'll be just that much more impressive when looking at your images. Feel free to display your Halina 35X proudly as a testament to what can be done with very simple tools.

Halina 35X
This Halina 35X is a camera that is not likely used to weather this chilly. Built by Haking Enterprises in Hong Kong, the Halina 35X is a fairly simple 35mm viewfinder camera. It has a 45mm f/3.5 Halina Anistigmat triplet lens, mounted in front of a leaf shutter capable of four shutter speeds between 1/25th to 1/200th (plus Bulb). It's a hefty and compact camera. At first, we thought it was a Kodak, it so closely resembles some of the early Kodak 35mm viewfinder cameras of the 1950s.
Halina is not a brand name you see too often, strangely enough. It's parent company, Haking, was founded in Hong Kong in 1956 and went on to make a number of cameras, and binoculars as well. There are Halina brand 35mm, 120, 110, 126, Disc, and even APS cameras. At some point Haking acquired the Ansco brand, and later moved their production facilities to China. As of 2013, they were still producing cameras, albeit digital cameras.
