Scene Selection with the Canon EOS 10S

One unique (and short-lived) innovation included with the Canon EOS 10S (aka the EOS 10 or 10QD depending on where in the world you bought it) was the booklet of specialized scenes/circumstances that came with the camera.  This small booklet laid out 23 different scenarios the intrepid Canon EOS 10S user could face, ranging from portraiture with the background far from the subject, or portraiture with the subject and the background and a sense of depth, to childhood natural expressions.  Each scenario had a barcode next to it, as well as a suggested focal length, film speed, and use of flash or tripod. Using a special accessory called the Barcode Reader E, which looked much like your typical IR wireless remote, the user could scan the appropriate barcode and information would be beamed to the camera where correct settings would automatically be chosen.  While ambitious in its desire to give consumer photographers greater consistency and versatility with their everyday photography, this innovation proved cumbersome and not terribly popular.  The Canon EOS 10S was the only Canon EOS camera to have this feature.
