This big, beautiful beast of a camera is a 5x7 Reflex Camera made in New York by the Reflex Camera Co. The company was founded in 1898, by a Dutch immigrant named Lodewijk Jan Rutger Holst, who was working for Goerz when he founded his own company to produce a fast action reflex camera. The company produced these cameras in both 4x5 and 5x7 sizes. They are very similar in function and design to the Graflex Reflex cameras, who were some of their competition, at the time. Eventually, that competition did in The Reflex Camera Company; they went out of business in 1915, but we are still left with the occasional Reflex camera.
The camera itself is a fine thing to hold. The body is a sturdy wood box covered in that lovely black leather that was so common among cameras of the early 20th century. A tall viewing hood folds up, allowing a shaded view of the ground glass focusing screen. The camera is a true SLR, meaning that, thanks to a reflex mirror in the body of the camera, the view through the focusing screen is the same as that seen by the lens itself. Typically these cameras were fitted with an Anastigmat 210mm f/16 lens.
