Billed as a "student" film, Kentmere Pan 400 delivers reasonable quality at a budget price, making it a great film for the beginning photographer or the photographers looking to save money on film costs. It is a panchromatic B&W film that is described as medium contrast, but in practice it tends to have a rather muted and soft look to its tonality. This both allows it to be versatile for harsher lighting but can also make the film look a bit muddy. Then again, it is always easier to add contrast in the analog or digital darkroom than it is to remove contrast. Alongside its softer contrast, Kentmere Pan 400 supposedly has a wide latitude, making it more forgiving of mis-exposure and further increasing its value to beginning or student photographers. Kentmere Pan 400 has a decently grainy look - one will never describe this as fine grained - that can be attractive to those looking to have more grit and texture to their images.
