Rollei Retro 80S is a superpanchromatic, black and white negative film with a low sensitivity of ISO 80. It features incredibly fine grain and very high resolving power.
The Rollei Retro 80S is manufactured by Agfa Gavaert in Belgium and is likely based on the Aviphot 80S Aerial Surveillance film. As an aerial surveillance film, it is designed with high resolution in mind. Imagine the detail you need in your photos when photographing the Earth from a plane. It also has extended red sensitivity, reaching out to 750nm. Again, in the realm of aerial photography this is a helpful quality in order to better cut through atmospheric haze and render crisper, cleaner images. This extended red sensitivity can lend the same benefits in normal still photography as well, helping reduce haziness in landscape photos made on clear, sunny days, as an example. But it also has the added benefit of serving as an infrared film capable of making dramatic b&w IR images when paired with the appropriate filter, such as a Hoya R72. In this case, vegetation or other elements that are prone to reflecting lots of infrared radiation will render a snowy white, while blue skies will turn a dramatic, deep black.
All of this combines to make the Rollei Retro 80S a very distinct and dramatic film. It has higher than normal contrast, which can be adjusted via exposure and development. Its slow speed gives it a very fine-grained appearance, and since it is coated on a clear PET base, it is also a great candidate for reversal processing into black and white slides!
