The Olympus XA4 is the culmination of the famed Olympus XA line of cameras. It was made for only about one year in 1985 and is, therefore, an uncommon camera to find on the market today. It very closely resembles the Olympus XA3 (which itself was a slightly improved version of the XA2) but with two significant additions. The first first of which is a new, five element 28mm f/3.5 lens. This gives the XA4 the widest lens of the bunch without sacrificing any speed. The previous XA2 and XA3 were also f/3.5 lenses, though they were only 35mm focal lengths. Only the original Olympus XA has a faster lens at f/2.8. Along with this new 28mm focal length, the minimum focusing distance on the XA4 is reduced to 0.3m, or about 12 inches. Again, this is a dramatic improvement compared to the minimum 2.8ft of previous XA cameras.
The XA4 took everything good about the XA system - the ultra compact design, stellar optics, ease of use, quiet shutter - and upped the ante just a bit further. They are a must have camera if you are looking to complete your full XA set, or even as a stand-alone pocket camera. While the original Olympus XA is arguably our favorite of the bunch, with its integrated rangefinder and f2.8 lens, the XA4 is easily a close second.
The Olympus XA4
If owning an Olympus XA2 or XA3 is like a warm mug of hot chocolate for the photographic soul, then the Olympus XA4 is like having cookies on the side - it makes life just that much better!
Why, you might ask?
It is true that the XA4 very closely resembles, both in appearance and function, its XA2 and XA3 predecessors, but there are two distinct factors in the XA4 to which we want draw your attention. The first is that it has a 28mm f/3.5 lens. This is the widest angle lens of the whole XA series - all the other Olympus XA cameras use a 35mm. If you are looking for wide angle capabilities that fit in your pocket, the XA4 is your thing.
The other sweet feature with the XA4 is its macro-capable focusing scale. The XA4 has a minimum focusing distance of 0.3 meters, or roughly 12 inches. The strap that came with the camera was conveniently the exact, right length to assist in gauging correct focusing distance!
If you come across one of these cameras, get it. It will be a sweet treat for your inner photographer.
