Introduced in 2020, the Fuji Instax Square SQ1 was an update (but not really an upgrade... kind of) on the previous SQ6 model. Fuji decided to add some things to the SQ1 while taking away other things, which is mildly appropriate given the marketing line of "Don't Just Take, Give" that the camera was promoted with. Gone were the already limited controls of the SQ6 replaced by... no control whatsoever. Fuji wanted to make the SQ1 as simple to use as possible and it couldn't be any more point and shoot than this. While the SQ1 lacks any sort of flash or exposure control, it does include a better autoexposure system that really does seem to produce richer, more properly exposed images on a more consistent basis across a wide range of lighting conditions. Likewise, turning the camera on and off is no longer even just the press of a button. The lens barrel is turned a partial turn to pop the lens out and power the camera on and that's it. A second turn a bit farther along will put the lens into selfie/macro mode. The change to the lens barrel makes the camera both easier and more reliable. Damage by impact to the extended lens barrel has been the death of more than a couple Instax cameras in our experience, so hopefully the SQ1's mechanical and non-motorized barrel is a bit less prone to this.
And that is really all there is to say about the SQ1: a simple summary for a simple camera. It uses the same lens as the SQ6, so the images look the same. They are still square - reminiscent of traditional Polaroid images but a tad smaller. It is still lightweight. It is still fun. There is always going to be a sense of magic to watching a piece of instant film develop into the photo moments after exposure.
Our First Pack Of Film With The SQ1
We recently got our first batch of Fuji Instax SQ1 cameras in to replace the older SQ6 models. These SQ1 cameras came in a nice terracotta orange that tended to split the staff into either the "love it" or "hate it" camps (the love it camp was larger, by they way). Along with these new-to-us cameras, came a fresh batch of the Instax Square Monochrome film. While we have had this film in inventory previously, we had not had any Instax Square cameras to test it in. So the stars aligned with this order's arrival. We promptly requisitioned one of the SQ1 cameras and a pack of the Square Monochrome film and out into the world we went!
