The Reality So Subtle 35R is a unique, 35mm pinhole camera introduced by James Guerin in 2022. The 35R has a pinhole on both sides of body, allowing the photographer to expose from the "normal" side onto the emulsion surface of the film - as is commonly done - or from the reverse side creating a redscale exposure through the base side of the film. Of course, one can also opt for double exposures overlapping an image made from each side of the camera onto the same frame.
The 35R creates a 35x36mm frame (larger than the standard 24x36mm frame size) meaning the full height of the film is used and the image is exposed over the sprocket holes of the film. As has become expected of Guerin's cameras, the 35R uses a highly precise, laser-drilled pinhole with an effective aperture of f160 that delivers very sharp images (for a pinhole). The effective focal length of the camera is 15mm (from both sides). One other innovative addition is a sprocket hole clicker that allows for very accurate, manual advancing of the film - no need to count turns!
Reality So Subtle 35R - First Roll Results
James Guerin included a tester Reality So Subtle 35R with our most recent order. We were excited to get our hands on it and immediately got it loaded with a roll of Fuji Superia 400 (because it was what we had on hand amidst the shortages of color 35mm film). The following images are the more interesting/successful photos from our first roll with this camera.
