Light Lens Lab 35mm f2 8-Element Collapsible for M39
Following their ambitious remake of the of the original Leica 35mm f2 Summicron (full review here), Light Lens Lab have continued to push the boundaries of the industry and have created this -- a fully collapsible version of the 8-element optical formula in M39 screw mount. Twisting the lens barrel with the focus locked by a tab at infinity allows the lens to recede into the camera body, significantly reducing the lens profile in a bag or jacket pocket.
The Light Lens Lab 35mm f2 8-Element Collapsible provides the same excellent imaging characteristics as its rigid-barrel sibling but expands its compatibility to include M39 screw mount camera bodies. The lens comes with a M39 - Leica M adapter to make it fully compatible with M cameras.
Ergonomically, the lens handles well, but does have some quirks inherent in the collapsible design. Because the entire barrel rotates when focused, it can be difficult to determine which aperture you have selected when focusing. Aperture scales are printed on both sides of the lens, one in red and one in black, and either can be oriented to the top when extended. The build quality of this lens feels great but is perhaps a bit less solid and well-finished than the (exceedingly well made) rigid LLL 35mm f2 Summicron replica.
One interesting feature of this new lens is that it has an extended close focus range beyond the 0.7 meter rangefinder-coupled limit, marked on the lens in red. This allows the lens to focus down to 0.5 meters on Leica digital cameras and when adapted to mirrorless setups.
