Freshly Serviced Canon F-1N
We have long been fans of the Canon New F-1 (same with the original F-1 to be honest), but one of the issues that has plagued us with the New F-1 is that our go-to trusted camera repair tech won't work on them. He sites a lack of experience and training and since the innards of the New F-1 are apparently different enough from the original F-1, he just hasn't ever felt comfortable enough going into them. It is not an uncommon issue in the world of camera repair. In order for a repair shop to be able to effectively service any old film camera they essentially need two things: the experience and skill with a particular camera model and an availability of spare parts. Time and again we have run up against one of the two of these. Either a tech is experienced and able to work on a camera but doesn't have the parts, or they don't have the necessary familiarity to do a good job of it even if parts are available or not necessary.
This was the quandary we have been in with the New F-1. We see them often enough but as with many film SLR cameras of this era, they generally are in need of servicing beyond simply pads and seals. Even the hardiest professional SLR will need to have its shutter tuned and its mechanisms cleaned and oiled and the meter calibrated after enough decades of use (or lack thereof).
Recently we got a spate of New F-1 cameras in and all of them needed repair of one sort or another. But this time we were not willing to just let them go. So we reached out to one of the other repair shops in our network, Camera Solutions, and asked if they would be willing to take these on. They acquiesced and off the cameras went. What you see pictured here is one of those New F-1 cameras, freshly back for servicing and out in the world with a roll of film.
Just as it should be.
