In the introductory essay of this 250 page retrospective of Emmit Gowin's work, Curator Keith Davis describes Gowin's work:: "Far from being denied, the aura of the spiritual is enlarged to embrace what is physical, immediate, and familiar. Signs of the sacred are everywhere; 'true light' is universal."
Emmit Gowin's religious upbringing inspired a quiet kindness in his work, which is especially evident when looking through his family photographs. Reminiscent of the work of Sally Mann, Gowin is famous for documenting his life with his wife and muse, Edith, and their children, over the course of their lives together. We are able to observe intimate family moments through Gowin's unique lens: teenage courtship, pregnancy, childhood, ageing, and death are all tenderly explored in his photographs. His later work, comprised of stunning images of landscapes and man-made wonders, are uniquely personal: Gowin describes a landscape photograph as "where the heart finds a place to stand." His evolution and growth as an artist is evident as the book progresses: his aerial views of modern landscapes represent his acceptance of the earth as the creator of his family and the cradle of his conciousness, and thus these images are treated with the same quiet care we observe in his portraits. Gowin accompanies his chapters with short, yet poignant writing which illustrate his emotional connection to his subjects (which, in turn, make the images feel sacred to the viewer.)
