The Underwood S is a robust desktop typewriter designed for heavy and constant use. Produced during the 1940s, the Underwood S usually included a segmented shift where the keys - instead of the carriage - would rise up when the shift key was depressed. Otherwise the Underwood S is a pretty standard 4-bank desktop with tab set/clear, 7-point touch control, upper and lower ribbon selector for red/black ribbons and an array of other features handy to the aspiring novelist or screenwriter.
