This Olympus OM-3 is a legendary piece of camera engineering. Designed by famed Olympus designer Yoshihisa Maitani, the Olympus OM-3 is one of the smallest, most compact 35mm SLR cameras ever built. Despite its small profile, the OM-3 has a big and beautiful viewfinder that makes looking through the lens a dream. In order to achieve its small size, the OM-3 has a non-traditional layout to its controls. The shutter speed dial is located at the base of the lens mount. This puts shutter, aperture and focus all under the control of one hand, generally the left, while the right hand controls firing of the shutter and winding of the film. It may take some getting used to but once learned it is a very convenient way of organizing a camera. The OM-3 is entirely mechanical in its shutter operation and only needs a battery to power the light meter. Shutter speeds range from 1/2000 to 1 second (plus bulb). The OM-3 also has a mirror lock up and mechanical self-timer. Depth of field preview is built into Olympus lenses, so the camera body does not need such a control.
In addition to all of these features, which the OM-3 shares with its predecessor the OM-1, the OM-3 has the additional feature of a sophisticated spot metering system which makes the camera sought after by Olympus collectors.
