The Curta is a mechanical, hand-held calculator designed by Curt Hertzstark in Austria prior to and during WWII. The Type II, released in the mid 1950s, allows for fast calculations and is a precision instrument. It features 11 slots along the cylinder for numerical input with the readout of results able to accommodate numbers as large as 15 digits. The compact size, precise engineering, and speed of use made Curta calculators incredibly popular among scientists until the advent of electronic calculators in the 1970s.
