The Pentax 45mm f4 SMC 6x7 is the widest rectilinear (non-distorting) lens in the Pentax 6x7 lineup, with an equivalent focal length of 24mm in 35mm format. Its construction features 9 elements in 8 groups, 8 aperture blades, and an 82mm filter thread that accepts Pentax's bayonet filters. The lens focuses down to just over 1ft (37cm) and weights just 486 grams.
Opinions on the optical performance of this lens vary considerably. The 45mm f4 SMC is generally credited with producing very little geometric distortion, a key quality for a wide-angle lens. While some have praised its detail reproduction, others have faulted it for a lack of sharpness and resolution, especially in comparison with the excellent 55mm f4 SMC 6x7. The Pentax 45mm f4 SMC 6x7 does show pronounced field curvature -- using f/11 or f/16 is often necessary to utilize depth-of-field to compensate -- and chromatic aberration at the edges of the frame.
What the Pentax 45mm f4 SMC 6x7 gives up in raw optical performance it more than makes up for with the dramatic perspective it brings to the Pentax 6x7 system. Interiors and street scenes are particularly ripe areas for exploration. The small size, easy handling, standard filter thread, and great close focus of this lens make it an excellent addition to any P67 kit.
