This is a Nikon 77mm Circular Polarizing Filter. Nikon used a consistent lens filter convention with the vast majority of their lenses, designing them with 52mm, 62mm, 72, or 77mm threads. That allows this polarizing filter to be compatible with many Nikon lenses requiring larger-sized filters.
A polarizing filter is one of the most useful filters to have on a lens. It cuts polarized light allowing for deeper color saturation or richer contrast. It is most commonly used in color photography but can also work with B&W photography. The filter has a rotating ring that allows the user to adjust the amount of polarization desired, ranging from full effect to no effect at all.
This is a circular polarizer designed for use with autofocus lenses without interfering with their ability to focus automatically. It can still be used with manual focus lenses as well.
