The Hammond typewriter was one of the first commercially produced typewriters and one of the longest manufactured ones as well. The earliest models date to the mid 1890s and - while appearing strange in comparison to more modern typewriters - were pretty ingenious and well designed. The Hammond No. 2 has an intriguing design and is built around an interchangeable type shuttle held within a central anvil. These shuttles could be swapped out for different character sets including large or small conventional type, cursive, non-Roman alphabets and even mathematical symbols. Another key difference between the Hammond No. 2 and more conventional typewriters is the lack of a typing platen. The type does not strike the paper but rather the paper is hit with a hammer causing it to strike the ribbon and type. Overall it is an interesting machine and a worthy addition to any typewriter collection.
