The Nikkormat FS was ostensibly an economy model in the Nikkormat series. Produced for a short time between July 1965 until September 1967, Nikon stripped the built-in meter from the Nikkormat FS to create a simpler camera that was still incredibly rugged and versatile. The Nikkormat FS would have sought a home in the hands of advanced amateurs or as a backup body to professional photojournalists who already owned a Nikon F. Since the Nikkormat FS lacks the built-in light meter, the camera also lacks a battery compartment, meter coupling prong and exposure read-out window on the top plate. Additionally, Nikon removed the mirror lock-up mechanism which means that lenses such as the Fisheye 8mm f8, 7.5mm f5.6 and 21mm f4 (with their protruding rear optics) cannot be used on this camera. The camera did retain the adjustable mechanical self-timer and depth of field preview. It also features a hinged rear door (as opposed to the removable door of the Nikon F). Nikon's literature of the time proclaimed the newly developed, metal 6-bladed focal plane shutter to be practically noiseless. Of course this should be taken as comparative to other metal focal plane shutters of the time because it is certainly not noiseless... perhaps just a bit less noisy than its contemporaries. Regardless, the shutter is capable of speeds from 1s to 1/1000, plus Bulb and has a fairly fast flash sync speed of 1/125 (thanks to the use of a vertically-travelling shutter).
Interesting enough, despite being a "budget" model, the low production numbers of the Nikkormat FS make it one of the rarest Nikkormat models and therefore of some desirability to Nikon collectors.
