The Leica MDa incorporates features from the Leica M4 in a camera meant for use in scientific, industrial and research photography. It lacks the rangefinder and viewfinder or normal Leica cameras, and accepts the special baseplate introduced on the Leica MD which permits a coded transparent identification tab to be inserted and printed on the negative at the time of exposure.
Although the new MDa will be used primarily for laboratory photography, it offers such Leica M4 features as full flash synchronization at speeds from 1 second to 1/50th, a rapid rewind crank and extra-fast film-loading system. It accepts all bayonet-mounting lenses and other M-model Leica accessories.
