Hydroquinone is one of the most commonly used chemicals for the development of B&W film in the darkroom. It is often paired with metol (known as an MQ developer) or with phenidone (a PQ developer). When paired with such chemicals, hydroquinone adds density and contrast. Common examples of MQ developers include Kodak D-76 and Ilford ID11. When used with phenidone to make a PQ developer the results are usually an increase in film speed, with common examples being Kodak HC-110 and Ilford Microphen. If you have any interest in mixing your own developers at home, hydroquinone is an essential ingredient to most film developer recipes.
