After her previously unseen body of work was discovered in 2007, Vivian Maier quickly garnered posthumous acclaim rarely enjoyed by her contemporaries. Often compared to Robert Frank, Lisette Model, and Diane Arbus, Maier made countless images in New York and Chicago in the 1950's and 1960's, often of peculiar street scenes and unwitting portraits. Maier's air of fearless anonymity served her in her ability to approach and capture a variety of people in a non-threatening way, and created a mystery about her which prevails today. Whether the artist meant for her work to be shared or seen is up for debate: she certainly never enjoyed notoriety as an artist in her lifetime. In this collection of her self-portraits, for which she is perhaps best known, Maier is shown ingeniously including herself in a variety of interesting scenes and spaces, often through reflection and shadow.
