Rollei Rolleiflex 2.8E

The list of qualities that make the Rolleiflex 2.8 family of cameras the superior TLRs that they are is long and varied.  Not only are they engineered solidly, have superior optics, and are easy to use, they make any photographer look great using them.  But if looking at the different Rolleiflex 2.8 models seems overwhelming and leaves you wondering how to choose, you're not alone.  Rollei produced many versions of these cameras with different options, so choosing the one that fits your needs is pretty easy once you know which features are available.  The 2.8C saw the introduction of a Carl Zeiss 80mm f/2.8 Planar lens option as well as a Schneider 80mm f/2.8 Xenotar lens option.  The 2.8D had a system that would lock the shutter speeds and aperture together.

Released in 1956, the Rolleiflex 2.8E's major advancement is the inclusion of a selenium light meter.  While the meter is not coupled to the aperture or shutter speed controls, it is very useful in measuring light and giving the user an EV (exposure value) number that can be used to set the number on the dials before locking in the aperture and shutter speed.  The Rolleiflex 2.8E stayed in production through 1959.  In 1960, it was replaced by the 2.8F, which would end up being the longest running model of the series.

Given the quality and reputation of all of the Rolleiflexes, it's a solid bet that any of the models is going to help you make great images.  So if you're in the market for a TLR, perhaps it's wise to think less about the different models and think more about how good you'll look with the camera.  Oh, and how nice your photos will look, too.
