Leica Leicaflex

Leica's first 35mm SLR camera that uses the Leica R bayonet lens mount. It was introduced in the mid 1960s as Nikon, Pentax, Minolta, and others were shifting their focus more toward SLR cameras and away from rangefinders.

While the first Leicaflex lacks some advancements (no TTL meter or interchangeable finder) it does have several other nice features including mirror lock up and a top shutter speed of 1/2000th of a second. The original Leicaflex cameras made use of the one-cam R lenses, and may be used with all of the Leica R lenses.

Tony Rosenwald's Leica Leicaflex

In 2017, we received a large consignment from Tony Rosenwald's estate. Tony had quite a life and we have enjoyed learning and sharing some of the stories from it as we have been sharing the cameras that he collected over that life. He certainly loved and collected more than just cameras. In fact, when his family initially contacted us, regarding helping them with the cameras, they also wanted to know if we had any interest in helping them with equally large collections of typewriters, milkshake mixers, knives, lighters, coins, and Parker 51 fountain pens. To be clear, Tony was not a hoarder. He cared for his equipment and kept it up, at least based on what we have seen of his cameras.

Another type of equipment that Tony loved was cars; at one point, this love of cars lead Tony to saving the car of Chet Baker. The story goes that Chet had parked his car on a hill and forgot to engage the brake. Next thing he knows, the car is rolling downhill without him; until Tony ran, jumped in the moving vehicle, threw in the brake, and saved Chet from an embarrassing and expensive incident.

Another example of Tony's love of cars comes in the form of a broken down Lanciaat that he had purchased at some point in the U.S. He arranged to have the car packed up and shipped with him to Italy, where he had it refurbished and brought back up to good working order. Once the work was completed, Tony spent several months driving it all around Italy and Europe.

We know stories like this don't do Tony's life justice, any more than they would for any of our lives. Nor do the cameras tell the whole story. But they do symbolize parts of it and we appreciate the value in that.
