Nimslo 3D

The Nimslo is a 35mm camera that uses an array of 4 lenses to produce 3D images that can be viewed by the naked eye. These "lenticular" images have a striking 3D effect, making this one of the most unique cameras available on the used market. Nimslo cameras are scarce in good operating condition.

The Nimslo and its lenticular print process were developed in the early 1980s by two American engineers, Jerry Nims and Allen Lo. Using the four taking lenses, the camera creates four 18x22mm images on the film, each with slightly different perspective, from which the 3D effect is obtained. The Nimslo produces 18 three-dimensional exposures from a roll of 36-exposure 35mm film.

Nimslo cameras are lightweight and pleasant to hold, with a "rounded brick" aesthetic. Build quality is good, with solid feel despite many plastic components. The leatherette covering adds some welcome grip. In operation, the camera handles similarly to standard 35mm cameras, with familiar film advance, shutter release, and rewind controls.

The viewfinder has projected bright lines for composition but no focusing control, as the Nimslo uses fixed-focus 30mm lenses. The viewfinder also features a built-in exposure indicator: a green LED displays when there is adequate exposure, and a red LED lights if the subject is too dark. Nimslo produced a dedicated flash unit, and the camera can also accept a standard single-pin aftermarket flash.

Film shot in a Nimslo can be processed by any standard lab. The camera marks each set of 4 negatives used to produce a 3D image with a small dot in the film rebate. The process for creating the stunning lenticular images the Nimslo is known for requires some work in an editing software, but the sets of images can be turned into animated gifs easily with online programs.

Nimslo cameras enjoy a strong following, and for good reason. They combine 3D imaging capability with the ease of use of a 35mm point-and-shoot, housed in a lightweight body that can slip into a jacket pocket. Somewhat hard to find today, Nimslos command strong values on online auctions. If you find one in working order at an attractive price, pick it up. The Nimslo has a way of shaking up your shooting habits.
